ACT Math Topics: What the Test Actually Covers and What to Study First
The worry most students bring to ACT Math is that it could ask about anything. You have finished Algebra II, you are somewhere in pre-calc, and there is at least one unit in there you never really got. If the test can reach across four years of math class, how are you supposed to review for it?
It can reach that far, but not evenly. The section is 45 questions in 50 minutes, and the same areas supply most of them every time. Knowing which ones is the difference between reviewing four years of notes and reviewing a list.
What Math Does the ACT Actually Test?
ACT sorts Math into two reporting categories, and both show up on your score report. Preparing for Higher Mathematics is high school math proper, broken into number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability. Integrating Essential Skills is the arithmetic that never goes away: rates, ratios, percentages, proportions, averages, area and volume.
A third label, Modeling, appears on the report too. It is not extra questions. It re-counts the ones from the other categories that involve building or interpreting a model, which makes it a readout on word problems rather than a separate topic to study.
Here is what each area looks like once it becomes a question:

What is not on that list matters as much as what is. No calculus, no derivatives, no integrals, no formal proofs. The hardest questions in the section are usually a topic you have already studied wearing an unfamiliar costume.
How Fast Do You Have to Move?
About 67 seconds a question on average, though the average is misleading, because the questions get harder as the section goes on. The early ones are not just easier, they are faster, and the last stretch is where the multi-step problems live.
So move through the opening questions well under the average and bank the time, but move carefully rather than quickly. Every question is worth the same toward your raw score, which means a careless slip on question 6 costs exactly what a genuinely hard question 44 costs, and it is a far cheaper point to recover. When something at the back stalls out, guess and move on. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
Do You Get a Formula Sheet?
No. The SAT provides one. The ACT does not, so everything you need has to already be in your head.
Memorize these: slope, midpoint, distance, area and circumference of a circle, the Pythagorean theorem, the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 side ratios, the quadratic formula, volume of a rectangular solid and a cylinder, arithmetic and geometric sequences, average as sum over count, and SOHCAHTOA. The geometry entries are the ones that catch people, because geometry class was probably two years ago and the formulas fade in a way that algebra does not.
How Much Trigonometry Is on the ACT?
Less than the reputation suggests, and most of it is one thing: a right triangle with two labeled sides and a question about sine, cosine, or tangent. SOHCAHTOA handles it.
The rest is a thin layer on top. A unit circle value at one of the common angles, a law of sines or law of cosines setup, a sine or cosine graph where you read off the amplitude or period. When Should You Use the Answer Choices Instead of the Algebra?
The choices are information, and in some questions they get you there faster than solving does.
Numbers in the choices, one specific value requested. Plug them in and see which one works. The choices are usually ordered smallest to largest, so start with one of the middle two. If your result comes out too large, that choice and everything above it are gone at once.
Variables in the question and variables in the choices. Pick your own number, run it through the question, then run the same number through every choice and keep whatever matches. Choose something small and easy but avoid 0 and 1, since too many expressions collapse to the same value at those and you end up with two choices that both look right.
Neither replaces knowing the math, and both are slower than clean algebra when you can see the algebra immediately. They earn their keep on the questions where you cannot, which is where students otherwise burn two minutes and miss it anyway.
What Changed on the Enhanced ACT Math Section?
The section is shorter, 45 questions in 50 minutes where the old format ran 60 in 60. That is more time per question, not less.
Answer choices dropped from five to four. Guessing improved slightly, and so did backsolving, since there is one fewer option to test.
Math also used to include small groups of questions that shared a paragraph or a chart. Those are gone. Every question now stands on its own, so nothing you read for one carries over to the next.

Can You Bring a Calculator?
Yes, and you can use it on the entire Math section. Any four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator works as long as it is not on ACT's prohibited list. The models that get turned away at the door are the computer algebra system ones, the TI-89 and the TI-Nspire CAS among them. Phones and tablets do not count as calculators.
Nobody hands you one at the test center. Bring your own, with batteries you have checked, and make it the one you have been practicing on. Test day is a bad morning to learn a new menu system.
Every question is written to be solvable without a calculator anyway. It saves arithmetic time, which is real, but it will not rescue a question you cannot set up.
How Should You Study This?
Log every missed question by topic, not by question number. After a couple of weeks the log stops saying "math is my weak section" and starts saying "systems of equations and circle geometry," which is a problem small enough to fix in an evening.
Then sort each miss by why it happened, because the reasons call for different responses:
- You did not know the concept. Relearn it, then drill it. This is the only category that requires new studying.
- You knew it but set it up wrong. Practice the same setup until recognition is automatic. More problems of that exact type, not more math in general.
- You set it up right and slipped on the arithmetic. Nothing to relearn. Slow down on the early questions and write out the steps you have been doing in your head.
Students collapse all of these into "I need to get better at math," which is why math prep so often feels endless. Sorted honestly, most logs turn out to be mostly the second and third kind.
