ACT Science Strategy: How to Work the Figures First

You signed up for the optional Science section because an engineering program recommended it, then opened a practice test to see what you were in for and found a page of graphs about soil respiration next to a table of numbers with no obvious point. Nothing in your biology class looked like that.

The conclusion most students draw is that they are underprepared because they do not know enough science. That conclusion is wrong, and acting on it sends you off reviewing chemistry notes the section is not going to ask about.

What Is the Section Actually Testing?

Whether you can pull a value off a graph, say how one variable moves when another changes, follow how an experiment was built, and decide which conclusion the data supports. The topic is scenery.

This is why a student who has never taken physics can do fine on a physics passage. The passage defines its terms, the figure carries the data, and the question asks you to do something with what is in front of you. What costs points is the clock and careless figure reading, not the subject.

Read the Question, Then Go to the Figure

On ACT Reading you read the passage first, because nine questions is too many to hold in mind while working through unfamiliar text. Science works the other way.

Most Science questions tell you where to go. "According to Figure 2," "in Study 1," "based on Table 3." That is a locator, and it means the rest of the page is temporarily irrelevant. Read the short introduction so you know what was being measured, then work question by question, going into the procedural paragraphs only when a question sends you there.

The prose describing how an experiment was run is the most expensive thing on the page to read and the least likely to be asked about directly.

Look at the Labels Before You Look at the Data

Every figure comes with a title, axis labels, units, and often a legend. Read those before you look at a single data point. It costs a few seconds and it prevents the most common way students lose points here, which is answering the right question about the wrong quantity.

Units are where it usually happens. The table reports milligrams and the answer choices are in grams, or the x-axis runs in minutes and the question asks about hours. Then check the shape of the figure itself:

  • An axis that descends instead of climbing will reverse any trend you read off it in a hurry.
  • A second y-axis on the right side means two curves are being measured against two different scales. Confirm which curve belongs to which axis before you compare them.
  • A legend sorting conditions rather than quantities means the lines are the same measurement taken under different setups, which is often what the question turns on.

Research summaries reward one specific habit: before you answer anything, work out what was different between Study 1 and Study 2. That single difference is the point of the whole passage, and a surprising share of the questions are really asking about it.

Conflicting Viewpoints Rewards a Different Habit

At least one passage on the section drops the figures and gives you scientists arguing. It reads like an English class assignment, and it takes longer than the data passages, which is worth knowing when you plan the clock.

Read one viewpoint completely, then put it in a few words of your own before you start the next one. Trying to hold them all at once is how students end up rereading. Then answer strictly from what the passage says, even when one of the viewpoints is scientifically outdated or plainly wrong. You are being asked what that scientist claimed, not whether they were right.

Some Questions Now Expect You to Bring Something

The Enhanced ACT leans a little harder on background knowledge than the old version did, and it includes a passage on an engineering or design topic, where questions ask about goals, constraints, and tradeoffs rather than about a clean experimental result.

None of this calls for a study plan in science content. The knowledge involved is foundational, the kind of thing an introductory course covers. The practical change is that you can no longer assume, the way you can on Reading, that literally everything you need is printed on the page.

What If a Figure Makes No Sense?

Look at what the question is asking before you decide you are lost. Most questions want one row, one comparison, or one direction of change, and you can supply that without understanding the experiment at all.

How Do You Budget the Forty Minutes?

Forty questions in forty minutes, so roughly a minute each, and the checkpoint that matters is the middle. If you are not somewhere near question 20 when 20 minutes have gone, you are reading prose that no question was going to ask about.

When time gets short, drop questions rather than walking away from a passage you have already worked into. You have paid the setup cost on that passage, and the questions attached to it are now the cheapest ones on the page. And bubble everything before the section ends. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is the only score you can be sure of not earning.

How Should You Practice This?

Log each miss by its cause, not by the passage it came from. Misread the figure, missed the units, ran out of time, answered from your own knowledge instead of the passage, or genuinely needed background you did not have.

Those causes have unrelated fixes, which is why "get better at Science" stalls as a plan. Unit errors are solved by a habit you build at the top of every figure. Time problems are solved by practicing a single passage against a timer. This is the same error-log approach that works on ACT English, and it turns a score into a short list of things to change.

The cost is the added fee and forty more minutes of test-day fatigue, not your headline score, which is why it stays the safer default for students heading toward engineering, nursing, or pre-med. It does still appear on the report a college receives.
